Cessna Citation crashed into mountainous terrain in a sparsely populated area of southwest Virginia. Officials said that the United States quickly sent F-16 fighter jets to chase a small plane that had entered the airspace around Washington D.C.
Cessna pilot was not responding
The pilot of the small plane was not responding to communications and eventually, the plane crashed into mountains in southwest Virginia.
When the fighter jets were trying to catch up with the small plane, they caused a loud noise called a sonic boom, which worried people in the Washington area.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that a small Cessna plane crashed in the mountains of southwest Virginia at the same time the loud noise was heard.
A Cessna Citation can carry between seven and twelve passengers. One U.S. official said that the fighter jets did not cause the crash.
