Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, has reached an agreement to resolve minor tax and gun charges following a five-year investigation. Republican allegations of major crimes being concealed were addressed in the course of this probe.
Hunter Biden Pleads Guilty To Tax Offenses
Prosecutors announced on Tuesday that Hunter Biden, aged 53, has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of failure to pay federal income tax. Additionally, he has admitted to unlawfully possessing a firearm while being a drug user.
The plea agreement between Hunter Biden and the US Attorney’s Office in Delaware, his home state, is subject to approval by a federal judge. Notably, it is unlikely that he will face imprisonment. As per The Washington Post, prosecutors are seeking probation for the tax and gun charges.
When questioned about the plea deal on Tuesday, President Biden, aged 80, expressed his pride in his son during a press event in California.
US Attorney David Weiss, an appointee of former president Donald Trump, stated that Hunter Biden had agreed to plead guilty to “two counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax.” The charges reveal that Hunter Biden, a lawyer and lobbyist educated at Yale, did not file his tax returns on time for earnings exceeding $1.5 million in 2017 and 2018. In both years, he owed over $100,000 in taxes on those earnings.
Each count carries a potential sentence of up to 12 months in prison, along with a fine of up to $100,000 or double the illicit gains.
Weiss further mentioned that Hunter Biden was also facing one count of “possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.”
