In an official statement on a Telegram channel, Prigozhin stated, “We have reached a critical juncture where bloodshed is imminent. Recognizing the responsibility for any loss of Russian lives on either side, we have made the decision to turn our convoys around and return to our field camps as planned.”

Shortly after the announcement, videos emerged showing Wagner mercenaries in Rostov boarding their trucks and departing the city. As they left, local civilians took selfies with the troops and cheered for their departure.

This unexpected conclusion to Wagner’s advance on Moscow was the outcome of a negotiated agreement between Prigozhin and the Kremlin, mediated by an unlikely intermediary: Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who relayed the information to Russian reporters through the state-controlled outlet TASS, in exchange for their retreat, the criminal charges against Prigozhin had been dropped.
