From July 2, 2023, the Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand has requested that the country’s national airline, Air New Zealand, implement a passenger weighing process for individuals departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport.

This initiative, referred to as a passenger weight survey by Air New Zealand

This initiative, referred to as a passenger weight survey by Air New Zealand, aims to collect data on the weight distribution and load of aircraft. According to the airline, it encompasses a comprehensive assessment of all items on board, including cargo, meals, and checked luggage.

However, for customers, crew members, and cabin bags, average weights are employed based on the results obtained from this survey, as stated by Alastair James, the airline’s specialist in load control improvement.

Airline assures passengers that their privacy will be safeguarded

Given the sensitive nature of personal weight information, Air New Zealand assures passengers that their privacy will be safeguarded through anonymization of the data.

Travelers will be requested to step onto a digital scale during the check-in process, with the weight information being transmitted to the survey while remaining hidden from the agent’s screen. Additionally, passengers will have their luggage weighed separately on an identical scale.
